Echoes of Hanna
Women Outside is a sound work of 23 mins duration, created as part of a large scale
installation Echoes of Hanna and first heard projected through two large scale speakers into
the empty prison yard of Cathal Brugha Barracks Rathmines, during the launch of Culture Night
Dublin 2016. Inspired and re-imagined from the original speeches, quotes and words of six
incredibly brave women who stood up to the authority of the day without thinking of the
consequences for themselves or their personal safety. Across time, race place and generation,
we hear their words linked by their belief in justice and equality for women.Their voices are
mediated through Hanna Sheehy Skeffington - narrated by the artist Olwen Fouere -
a remarkable early Irish Feminist (1877-1946). In the full recording, each sequential
sound script is punctuated by an short ambient sound collage.

These remarkable women have personally taken on some of the most repressive
regimes, often putting themselves and their families in extreme danger. They stand
for individual and collective independent thought and freedom. It is fitting that,
recontextualised in this historical prisoners' yard, their dreams, words and actions create a
continuous chant echoing over these stark red-brick walls to resonate out into the community
beyond and the wider world to reach a new audience. Like the way the sea whispers around us
as a constant reminder of the passing of time, these voices celebrate and remind us of the
power of the individual to stand up to and question unequal belief systems that, so often hidden in
the guise of tradition, social custom and familiarity, become normalised and acceptable.
